Washougal River Fishing
The Washougal River is a 33 mile long river that starts in Skamania County and ends in Clark County. We offer Guided Washougal River Fishing Trips on the bottom 12 miles of the river, we start in one of several places up Washougal River Road and end in the small town of Washougal. The entire river is designated as a drift boat or raft only river, and is considered slightly technical due to its many hidden rocks and boulders especially in low water conditions. The majority of the Washougal River fishing that we do is either pulling plugs behind the drift boat or bobber and jig/eggs fishing. Technique is dependent on the fish and water conditions.
The Washougal River is a near year round fishery. Beginning with an awesome run of Winter Steelhead, which starts in January and runs into the end of March. The Winter run steelhead in the Washougal aren’t as lethargic as some of the other Winter run fish in other rivers providing an awesome bite and fight when they are in the system. Not too long after the Winter run ends, the Washougal fills with a Summer run of Steelhead that is one of the best in the state. The Summer run Steelhead are “biters” and provide excellent action on bobber and jig and smaller presentations. The Summer run Steelhead generally run from late June to early October and it is not uncommon to catch a Fall King or Coho at the tail end of the Steelhead Run. As for the Chinook and Coho runs, the Fall/Winter runs generally start in mid to late August
and can extend through November. Most of the Salmon fishing that we do is at the mouth of the river, or the bottom 3 miles. Once the fish get past that point they are starting to darken up a bit and the meat starts to break down making for inadequate table fare.
